A query is one subpart of a paper's research question. Stage 0 reads the article and states its research questions; stage A breaks each question into subparts, each naming a class of image evidence and writing a query_text, an image-search prompt, from the question's text alone, without the captions, the article text or the images. A query is identified as <paper>:q<question>:<subpart>.
The tier says what the query is about: primary for the question's own named object, comparanda for a broader class of works to compare it with (at most two per paper).
The gold figures are the figures of the same paper that stage C, shown the images from the article page, judged to satisfy the query fully or partly. A paper's own figures are its gold set: they are the evidence the author chose. These are the v1 queries, the ones with at least one gold figure. The other 142 subparts matched no figure and are left out.
