# EgoHand-1.0 Overview
|
| 6 |
+
|
| 7 |
+
## Description:
|
| 8 |
+
EgoHand predicts SOMA-hand parameters (pose, 27D MHR shape/scale coefficients) and a full-perspective camera translation (conditioned on input camera intrinsics) from a single image cropped from a 2D hand bounding box and resized to 256×256, using a DINOv3 vision backbone (initialized from [SAM 3D Body](https://huggingface.co/facebook/sam-3d-body-dinov3)) feeding a TransformerDecoder head (SOMAHandTransformerDecoderHeadV2) with learnable init pose/shape/camera queries. The predicted shape/scale coefficients parameterize MHR's rest-pose hand identity, which SOMA's rig then deforms via forward kinematics using the predicted pose to produce the final 3D hand mesh. It is trained on synthetic and real world hand data with keypoint-2D, keypoint-3D, and MHR/SOMA parameter losses computed in the crop frame, and is evaluated on the HOT3D real-world egocentric benchmark.

### Use Case:
|
| 22 |
+
EgoHand could be used by researchers and engineers working on egocentric hand pose estimation to produce accurate 3D hand keypoints and MHR/SOMA-hand mesh parameters from single RGB crops. The resulting 3D hand pose/keypoint data serves as a training signal for downstream robotics applications — particularly robotic foundation models and manipulation policy training, where accurate hand trajectories human demonstration video are needed to supervise or bootstrap policy learning.

Our AI models are designed and/or optimized to run on NVIDIA GPU-accelerated systems. By leveraging NVIDIA's hardware (e.g. GPU cores) and software frameworks (e.g., CUDA libraries), the model achieves faster training and inference times compared to CPU-only solutions.

The integration of foundation and fine-tuned models into AI systems requires additional testing using use-case-specific data to ensure safe and effective deployment. Following the V-model methodology, iterative testing and validation at both unit and system levels are essential to mitigate risks, meet technical and functional requirements, and ensure compliance with safety and ethical standards before deployment.

# Bias Subcard
|
| 2 |
+
|
| 3 |

## Participation considerations from adversely impacted groups [protected classes](https://www.senate.ca.gov/content/protected-classes) in model design and testing:
|
| 4 |
+
|
| 5 |
+
Age, Ethnicity, Gender, Skin Color
|
| 6 |
+
|
| 7 |
+
## Measures taken to mitigate against unwanted bias:
|
| 8 |
+
|
| 9 |
+
- For real-world data, data was sourced from multiple vendors and curated to achieve diverse distribution across hand size, pose, and data collectors.
|
| 10 |
+
- For synthetic data, virtual characters with varying age, ethnicity, and skin color were used to ensure demographic diversity in training samples.

## Describe how the model works:
|
| 20 |
+
|
| 21 |
+
EgoHand takes a single 256×256 RGB crop of a hand (extracted from a 2D bounding box detection) and camera intrinsics as input. A DINOv3 Vision Transformer backbone extracts image features, which are fed into a TransformerDecoder head with learnable pose, shape, and camera queries. The decoder predicts SOMA-hand parameters — joint rotations and 27D MHR shape/scale coefficients — along with a full-perspective camera translation conditioned on the input intrinsics. The SOMA rig then applies forward kinematics to the predicted parameters to produce the final 3D hand joints and mesh.

## Technical Limitations and Mitigation:
|
| 28 |
+
|
| 29 |
+
The model may not generalize or perform well in challenging scenes, such as low lighting, heavy occlusion (e.g., hands partially blocked by objects, the other hand, or the frame edge), motion blur from fast hand movement, or unusual hand poses not well represented in training data. Accuracy depends on the quality of the upstream 2D bounding box detection — a missed or inaccurate bbox will degrade 3D pose output for that frame. Mitigation: fine-tuning on additional real-world egocentric data covering these conditions, and applying corresponding data augmentation during training. Upgrading or fine-tuning the upstream 2D hand detector on domain-specific data can also significantly improve overall 3D pose quality by providing more accurate and consistent bounding box inputs.

## Potential Known Risks:
|
| 43 |
+
|
| 44 |
+
The model may produce inaccurate 3D hand pose or mesh for frames with heavy occlusion, fast motion blur, or poses underrepresented in training data. Errors in predicted joint positions or mesh vertices may propagate to downstream applications (e.g., robot policy training), potentially degrading the quality of learned manipulation behaviors.
