Veritas: Generalizable Deepfake Detection via Pattern-Aware Reasoning

Deepfake detection remains a formidable challenge due to the complex and evolving nature of fake content in real-world scenarios. However, existing academic benchmarks suffer from severe discrepancies from industrial practice, typically featuring homogeneous training sources and low-quality testing images, which hinder the practical deployments of current detectors. To mitigate this gap, we introduce HydraFake, a dataset that simulates real-world challenges with hierarchical generalization testing. Specifically, HydraFake involves diversified deepfake techniques and in-the-wild forgeries, along with rigorous training and evaluation protocol, covering unseen model architectures, emerging forgery techniques and novel data domains. Building on this resource, we propose Veritas, a multi-modal large language model (MLLM) based deepfake detector. Different from vanilla chain-of-thought (CoT), we introduce pattern-aware reasoning that involves critical reasoning patterns such as "planning" and "self-reflection" to emulate human forensic process. We further propose a two-stage training pipeline to seamlessly internalize such deepfake reasoning capacities into current MLLMs. Experiments on HydraFake dataset reveal that although previous detectors show great generalization on cross-model scenarios, they fall short on unseen forgeries and data domains. Our Veritas achieves significant gains across different OOD scenarios, and is capable of delivering transparent and faithful detection outputs.

VERITAS: A Multi-Agent Co-Scientist for Verifiable Image-Derived Hypothesis Testing

Scientific research based on multimodal clinical data (including medical imaging) requires coordinating clinical, radiological, programming, and biostatistical expertise, a fragmented process that bottlenecks discovery. We present VERITAS (Verifiable Epistemic Reasoning for Image-Derived Hypothesis Testing via Agentic Systems), a clinical co-scientist: a multi-agent system that autonomously tests natural-language hypotheses and produces a fully auditable evidence trail, tracing every conclusion through executable outputs from analysis plan to segmentation masks to statistical code to final verdict. Unlike prior AI-scientist systems, which mainly operate on tabular or text data, VERITAS grounds autonomous discovery directly in medical images. It decomposes the workflow into four phases handled by role-specialized agents, and introduces an epistemic evidence label framework that mechanically classifies outcomes as Supported, Refuted, Underpowered, or Invalid by jointly evaluating significance, effect direction, and study power. This distinction is critical in medical imaging, where non-significant results often reflect insufficient sample size rather than absent effects. We construct a tiered benchmark of 64 hypotheses spanning six complexity levels across cardiac and brain glioma MRI datasets. VERITAS reaches 81.4% verdict accuracy with frontier models and 71.2% with locally-hosted open-weight models (8-30B), outperforming all single-model baselines in both classes. It also produces the highest rate of independently verifiable statistical outputs (86.6%), so even its failures remain diagnosable through artifact inspection. Structured multi-agent decomposition thus substitutes for model scale while preserving the verifiability that scientific discovery demands. We release code, hypothesis bank, and evaluation pipeline at https://github.com/LucZot/veritas.

Veritas++: Value-aware On-Policy Distillation for Perception-Enhanced AIGI Detection

The growing capability of image generation models has made synthetic images a routine presence in open media, making robust and generalizable AI-Generated Image (AIGI) detection increasingly essential. While multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) offer a transparent alternative to black-box binary scoring, we observe that current MLLM-based detectors still exhibit notable perception bottlenecks in capturing fine-grained anomalies. They primarily focus on how visual evidence is organized and synthesized, leaving the intrinsic perception less optimized. To mitigate this gap, we present Veritas++, a perception-enhanced reasoning framework that establishes reliable perception as the foundation of authenticity reasoning. Rather than directly optimizing the model's explanatory ability, we ground AIGI detection on three basic perception abilities, i.e., capturing fine-grained visual details, semantic anomalies and pixel-level differences. Building on this insight, we introduce Perception-oriented Learning (PoRL), which replaces open-ended description supervision with verifiable rewards to explicitly strengthen these capacities. To further integrate enhanced perception with reasoning, we introduce Value-aware On-Policy Distillation (VaOPD), an adaptive distillation mechanism that prioritizes high-value distillation signals over uniform supervision, internalizing perception-aware reasoning through a privileged self-teacher. Extensive experiments across standard, in-the-wild and emerging benchmarks demonstrate that Veritas++ achieves promising generalization. The perception learning effectively bridges the perception gap and yields seamless gains on detection, while VaOPD further enables efficient capability evolvement without sacrificing existing performance. Code and checkpoints are available at https://github.com/EricTan7/VeritasPP.

VeritasFi: An Adaptable, Multi-tiered RAG Framework for Multi-modal Financial Question Answering

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is becoming increasingly essential for Question Answering (QA) in the financial sector, where accurate and contextually grounded insights from complex public disclosures are crucial. However, existing financial RAG systems face two significant challenges: (1) they struggle to process heterogeneous data formats, such as text, tables, and figures; and (2) they encounter difficulties in balancing general-domain applicability with company-specific adaptation. To overcome these challenges, we present VeritasFi, an innovative hybrid RAG framework that incorporates a multi-modal preprocessing pipeline alongside a cutting-edge two-stage training strategy for its re-ranking component. VeritasFi enhances financial QA through three key innovations: (1) A multi-modal preprocessing pipeline that seamlessly transforms heterogeneous data into a coherent, machine-readable format. (2) A tripartite hybrid retrieval engine that operates in parallel, combining deep multi-path retrieval over a semantically indexed document corpus, real-time data acquisition through tool utilization, and an expert-curated memory bank for high-frequency questions, ensuring comprehensive scope, accuracy, and efficiency. (3) A two-stage training strategy for the document re-ranker, which initially constructs a general, domain-specific model using anonymized data, followed by rapid fine-tuning on company-specific data for targeted applications. By integrating our proposed designs, VeritasFi presents a groundbreaking framework that greatly enhances the adaptability and robustness of financial RAG systems, providing a scalable solution for both general-domain and company-specific QA tasks.
