SubscribeCayleyPy Growth: Efficient growth computations and hundreds of new conjectures on Cayley graphs (Brief version)
This is the third paper of the CayleyPy project applying artificial intelligence to problems in group theory. We announce the first public release of CayleyPy, an open source Python library for computations with Cayley and Schreier graphs. Compared with systems such as GAP and Sage, CayleyPy handles much larger graphs and performs several orders of magnitude faster. Using CayleyPy we obtained about 200 new conjectures on Cayley and Schreier graphs, focused on diameters and growth. For many Cayley graphs of symmetric groups Sn we observe quasi polynomial diameter formulas: a small set of quadratic or linear polynomials indexed by n mod s. We conjecture that this is a general phenomenon, giving efficient diameter computation despite the problem being NP hard. We propose a refinement of the Babai type conjecture on diameters of Sn: n^2/2 + 4n upper bounds in the undirected case, compared to previous O(n^2) bounds. We also provide explicit generator families, related to involutions in a square with whiskers pattern, conjectured to maximize the diameter; search confirms this for all n up to 15. We further conjecture an answer to a question posed by V M Glushkov in 1968 on directed Cayley graphs generated by a cyclic shift and a transposition. For nilpotent groups we conjecture an improvement of J S Ellenberg's results on upper unitriangular matrices over Z/pZ, showing linear dependence of diameter on p. Moreover. Some conjectures are LLM friendly, naturally stated as sorting problems verifiable by algorithms or Python code. To benchmark path finding we created more than 10 Kaggle datasets. CayleyPy works with arbitrary permutation or matrix groups and includes over 100 predefined generators. Our growth computation code outperforms GAP and Sage up to 1000 times in speed and size.
On cusp holonomies in strictly convex projective geometry
We give a complete characterization of the holonomies of strictly convex cusps and of round cusps in convex projective geometry. We build families of generalized cusps of non-maximal rank associated to each strictly convex or round cusp. We also extend Ballas-Cooper-Leitner's definition of generalized cusp to allow for virtually solvable fundamental group, and we produce the first such example with non-virtually nilpotent fundamental group. Along with a companion paper, this allows to build strictly convex cusps and generalized cusps whose fundamental group is any finitely generated virtually nilpotent group. This also has interesting consequences for the theory of relatively Anosov representations.
Fixed point conditions for non-coprime actions
In the setting of finite groups, suppose J acts on N via automorphisms so that the induced semidirect product Nrtimes J acts on some non-empty set Omega, with N acting transitively. Glauberman proved that if the orders of J and N are coprime, then J fixes a point in Omega. We consider the non-coprime case and show that if N is abelian and a Sylow p-subgroup of J fixes a point in Omega for each prime p, then J fixes a point in Omega. We also show that if N is nilpotent, Nrtimes J is supersoluble, and a Sylow p-subgroup of J fixes a point in Omega for each prime p, then J fixes a point in Omega.
Volumes of Nullhomotopies in Nilpotent Spaces
The Shadowing Principle of Manin has proved a valuable tool for addressing questions of quantitative topology raised by Gromov in the late 1900s. The principle informally provides a way for bounded algebraic maps between differential graded algebras to be translated into nearby genuine maps between their geometric realizations. We extend this principle to finite towers of principal K(G,n) fibrations, and in particular apply this construction to nilpotent spaces. As a specific application of the extended principle, we provide upper bounds on the asymptotic behavior of volumes of nullhomotopies of Lipschitz maps into nilpotent spaces. We further refine these bounds in the case when c = 1 to nearly meet those of the simply connected setting. We similarly refine these bounds in the event the target space is coformal, and demonstrate that the bounds in this setting are nearly sharp.
A Group with Exactly One Noncommutator
The question of whether there exists a finite group of order at least three in which every element except one is a commutator has remained unresolved in group theory. In this article, we address this open problem by developing an algorithmic approach that leverages several group theoretic properties of such groups. Specifically, we utilize a result of Frobenius and various necessary properties of such groups, combined with Plesken and Holt's extensive enumeration of finite perfect groups, to systematically examine all finite groups up to a certain order for the desired property. The computational core of our work is implemented using the computer system GAP (Groups, Algorithms, and Programming). We discover two nonisomorphic groups of order 368,640 that exhibit the desired property. Our investigation also establishes that this order is the minimum order for such a group to exist. As a result, this study provides a positive answer to Problem 17.76 in the Kourovka Notebook. In addition to the algorithmic framework, this paper provides a structural description of one of the two groups found.
Classifying the Groups of Order p^3 in Lean
This note discusses our formalisation in Lean 4 of the classification of groups of order p^3 for a prime number p, using mathlib4. We present the five isomorphism classes and give a detailed account of the formalisation, with particular emphasis on the non-abelian case, which requiring the most substantial formal development. For odd~p, the non-abelian groups are the Heisenberg group Heis(Z/pZ) and the semidirect product Z/p^2ZrtimesZ/pZ; for p=2, they are D_4 and Q_8. We describe the construction of these concrete groups, the structural lemmas about centers, commutators, and exponents, and the explicit isomorphism constructions that classify an arbitrary non-abelian p^3-group.
An addendum on the Mathieu Conjecture for SU(N), Sp(N) and G_2
In this paper, we sharpen results obtained by the author in 2023. The new results reduce the Mathieu Conjecture on SU(N) (formulated for all compact connected Lie groups by O. Mathieu in 1997) to a conjecture involving only functions on R^ntimes (S^1)^m with n,m non-negative integers instead of involving functions on R^ntimes (S^1setminus{1})^m. The proofs rely on a more recent work of the author (2024) and a specific KAK decomposition. Finally, with these results we can also improve the results on the groups Sp(N) and G_2 in the latter paper, since they relied on the construction introduced in the 2023 paper.
Commutators between coprime order elements in non-abelian simple groups
Recent investigations on the set of commutators between the elements of a finite group having relatively prime orders have prompt us to propose a variant of the Ore conjecture: For every finite non-abelian simple group and for every gin G, there exist x,yin G with g=[y,x] and with the order of x relatively prime to the order of y. In this note we present some evidence towards the veracity of this conjecture by proving it for alternating groups and some sporadic simple groups.
Floer-theoretic filtration on Painlevé Hitchin systems
We classify equivariant C^*-actions on moduli spaces of Higgs bundles corresponding to the Painlevé equations. Using this, we compute the Floer-theoretic filtrations on the cohomology of these spaces, introduced by Ritter and the second author in arXiv:2304.13026. We compare it with the ``P=W'' and the filtration obtained by multiplicities of the irreducible components of the nilpotent cone, ultimately deducing that the Floer-theoretic filtration coincides with the multiplicity filtration, for all 2-dimensional Higgs moduli.
Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements
Given a semisimple complex linear algebraic group G and a lower ideal I in positive roots of G, three objects arise: the ideal arrangement A_I, the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety Hess(N,I), and the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety Hess(S,I). We show that a certain graded ring derived from the logarithmic derivation module of A_I is isomorphic to H^*(Hess(N,I)) and H^*(Hess(S,I))^W, the invariants in H^*(Hess(S,I)) under an action of the Weyl group W of G. This isomorphism is shown for general Lie type, and generalizes Borel's celebrated theorem showing that the coinvariant algebra of W is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the flag variety G/B. This surprising connection between Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements enables us to produce a number of interesting consequences. For instance, the surjectivity of the restriction map H^*(G/B)to H^*(Hess(N,I)) announced by Dale Peterson and an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Sommers-Tymoczko are immediate consequences. We also give an explicit ring presentation of H^*(Hess(N,I)) in types B, C, and G. Such a presentation was already known in type A or when Hess(N,I) is the Peterson variety. Moreover, we find the volume polynomial of Hess(N,I) and see that the hard Lefschetz property and the Hodge-Riemann relations hold for Hess(N,I), despite the fact that it is a singular variety in general.
Certain residual properties of HNN-extensions with normal associated subgroups
Let E be the HNN-extension of a group B with subgroups H and K associated according to an isomorphism varphicolon H to K. Suppose that H and K are normal in B and (H cap K)varphi = H cap K. Under these assumptions, we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for E to be residually a C-group, where C is a class of groups closed under taking subgroups, quotient groups, and unrestricted wreath products. Among other things, these conditions give new facts on the residual finiteness and the residual p-finiteness of the group E.
Embeddings of symplectic balls into the complex projective plane
We investigate spaces of symplectic embeddings of nleq 4 balls into the complex projective plane. We prove that they are homotopy equivalent to explicitly described algebraic subspaces of the configuration spaces of n points. We compute the rational homotopy type of these embedding spaces and their cohomology with rational coefficients. Our approach relies on the comparison of the action of PGL(3,C) on the configuration space of n ordered points in CP^2 with the action of the symplectomorphism group Symp(CP^2) on the space of n embedded symplectic balls.
Combining relatively hyperbolic groups over a complex of groups
Given a complex of groups G(Y) = (G_sigma, psi_a, g_{a,b}) where all G_sigma are relatively hyperbolic, the psi_a are inclusions of full relatively quasiconvex subgroups, and the universal cover X is CAT(0) and delta--hyperbolic, we show pi_1(G(Y)) is relatively hyperbolic. The proof extends the work of Dahmani and Martin by constructing a model for the Bowditch boundary of pi_1(G(Y)). We prove the model is a compact metrizable space on which G acts as a geometrically finite convergence group, and a theorem of Yaman then implies the result. More generally, this model shows how any suitable action of a relatively hyperbolic group on a simply connected cell complex encodes a decomposition of the Bowditch boundary into the boundary of the cell complex and the boundaries of cell stabilizers. We hope this decomposition will be helpful in answering topological questions about Bowditch boundaries.
Bi-quadratic Pólya fields with five distinct ramified primes
For an algebraic number field K, the Pólya group of K, denoted by Po(K), is the subgroup of the ideal class group Cl_{K} generated by the ideal classes of the products of prime ideals of same norm. The number field K is said to be Pólya if Po(K) is trivial. Motivated by several recent studies on the group Po(K) when K is a totally real bi-quadratic field, we investigate the same with five distinct odd primes ramifying in K/Q. This extends the previous results on this problem, where the number of distinct ramified primes was at most four.
Combinatorial Characterizations of Virtually Torsion-Free and Virtually Free Groups
We establish combinatorial characterizations of virtually torsion-free and virtually free groups using the canonical graph decomposition theory in DJKK22. Our main results show that a finitely presented, residually finite group Γ is virtually torsion-free if and only if there exists a locality parameter r>0 such that its r-local cover admits a canonical tree-decomposition with finite quotient and finite adhesion, every finite subgroup of Γ fixes a vertex of this decomposition, and the finite subgroups in each bag have uniformly bounded order. Moreover, a finitely generated group Γ is virtually free if and only if for some r>0 its r-global decomposition has a finite model graph with finite bags and the tree-decomposition of the r-local cover is Γ-equivariantly isomorphic to the Bass--Serre tree arising from a splitting of Γ as a finite graph of finite groups.
Modular law through GKM theory
The solution of Shareshian-Wachs conjecture by Brosnan-Chow and Guay-Paquet tied the graded chromatic symmetric functions on indifference graphs (or unit interval graphs) and the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties with the dot action. A similar result holds between unicellular LLT polynomials and twins of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. A recent result by Abreu-Nigro enabled us to prove these results by showing the modular law for the geometrical objects, and this is indeed done by Precup-Sommers and Kiem-Lee. In this paper, we give elementary and simpler proofs to the modular law through GKM theory.
New infinite families in the stable homotopy groups of spheres
We identify seven new 192-periodic infinite families of elements in the 2-primary stable homotopy groups of spheres. Although their Hurewicz image is trivial for topological modular forms, they remain nontrivial after T(2)- as well as K(2)-localization. We also obtain new information about 2-torsion and 2-divisibility of some of the previously known 192-periodic infinite families in the stable stems.
Unital 3-dimensional structurable algebras: classification, properties and AK-construction
This paper is devoted to the classification and studying properties of complex unital 3-dimensional structurable algebras. We provide a complete list of non-isomorphic classes, identifying five algebras for type (2, 1) and two algebras for type (1, 2). For each obtained algebra, we describe the derivation algebra, the automorphism group, the lattice of subalgebras and ideals, and functional identities of degree 2. Furthermore, we investigate the Allison-Kantor construction for the classified algebras. We determine the structure of the resulting Z-graded Lie algebras, providing their dimensions and Levi decompositions.
Stable rationality of hypersurfaces in schön affine varieties
In recent years, there has been a development in approaching rationality problems through the motivic methods (cf. [Kontsevich--Tschinkel'19], [Nicaise--Shinder'19], [Nicaise--Ottem'21]). This method requires the explicit construction of degeneration families of curves with favorable properties. While the specific construction is generally difficult, [Nicaise--Ottem'22] combines combinatorial methods to construct degeneration families of hypersurfaces in toric varieties and shows the non-stable rationality of a very general hypersurface in projective spaces. In this paper, we extend the result of [Nicaise--Ottem'22] not only for hypersurfaces in algebraic tori but also to those in sch\"{o}n affine varieties. In application, we show the irrationality of certain hypersurfaces in the complex Grassmannian variety Gr(2, n) using the motivic method, which coincides with the result obtained by the same author in the previous research.
Bi-twisted conjugacy in finite groups
We provide two alternative ways to determine the number of (bi-)twisted conjugacy classes in a finite group: one by counting certain irreducible characters and one by counting certain twisted conjugacy classes of other endomorphisms. In addition, we show various inequalities and congruences for Reidemeister numbers, as well as relations between bi-twisted conjugacy, representation theory, and fixed-point free automorphisms.
On integral extensions between the abelianization functor and its symmetric powers
This paper aims to study Ext-groups between certain functors defined on the category of finitely generated free groups. Rational Ext-groups between the abelianization functor and its symmetric powers are known, and are almost always equal to zero. Recently, using homotopical methods, Arone constructed an explicit bounded complex whose homology corresponds to the integral Ext-groups between the abelianization functor and its symmetric powers. The homology of this complex is far from being trivial. Using this complex, we explicitly calculate some of these Ext-groups. More precisely, we compute Ext^1, Ext^2, Ext^{d-1} and Ext^{d-2} between the abelianization functor and its dth symmetric power. We further explain how Arone's complex can be obtained from an explicit projective resolution of the abelianization functor. We compare our results with the computation of Ext-groups between functors from finitely generated free abelian groups, obtained by Franjou and Pirashvili. In particular, we obtain that the composition with the abelianization functor induces an isomorphism for the Ext^1 considered in this paper.
Models of Abelian varieties over valued fields, using model theory
Given an elliptic curve E over a perfect defectless henselian valued field (F,val) with perfect residue field k_F and valuation ring O_F, there exists an integral separated smooth group scheme E over O_F with Etimes_{Spec O_F}Spec Fcong E. If char(k_F)neq 2,3 then one can be found over O_{F^{alg}} such that the definable group E(O) is the maximal generically stable subgroup of E. We also give some partial results on general Abelian varieties over F. The construction of E is by means of generating a birational group law over O_F by the aid of a generically stable generic type of a definable subgroup of E.
Computing Picard Schemes
We present an algorithm to compute the torsion component Pic^τX of the Picard scheme of a smooth projective variety X over a field k. Specifically, we describe Pic^τX as a closed subscheme of a projective space defined by explicit homogeneous polynomials. Furthermore, we compute the group scheme structure on Pic^τX. As applications, we provide algorithms to compute various homological invariants. Among these, we compute the abelianization of the geometric étale fundamental group π^{{et}}_1(X_{k}, x)^{ab}. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure of the first étale cohomology groups H^1_{{et}}(X_{k}, Z/nZ) without requiring n to be prime to the characteristic of k.
iQuantum groups and iHopf algebras II: dual canonical bases
Building on the iHopf algebra realization of quasi-split universal iquantum groups developed in a prequel, we construct the dual canonical basis for a universal iquantum group of arbitrary finite type, which are further shown to be preserved by the ibraid group action; this recovers the results of Lu-Pan in ADE type obtained earlier in a geometric approach. Moreover, we identify the dual canonical basis for the Drinfeld double quantum group of arbitrary finite type, which is realized via iHopf algebra on the double Borel, with Berenstein-Greenstein's double canonical basis, settling several of their conjectures.
Generalized Reduction to the Isotropy for Flexible Equivariant Neural Fields
Many geometric learning problems require invariants on heterogeneous product spaces, i.e., products of distinct spaces carrying different group actions, where standard techniques do not directly apply. We show that, when a group G acts transitively on a space M, any G-invariant function on a product space X times M can be reduced to an invariant of the isotropy subgroup H of M acting on X alone. Our approach establishes an explicit orbit equivalence (X times M)/G cong X/H, yielding a principled reduction that preserves expressivity. We apply this characterization to Equivariant Neural Fields, extending them to arbitrary group actions and homogeneous conditioning spaces, and thereby removing the major structural constraints imposed by existing methods.
Flat matrix models for quantum permutation groups
We study the matrix models pi:C(S_N^+)to M_N(C(X)) which are flat, in the sense that the standard generators of C(S_N^+) are mapped to rank 1 projections. Our first result is a generalization of the Pauli matrix construction at N=4, using finite groups and 2-cocycles. Our second result is the construction of a universal representation of C(S_N^+), inspired from the Sinkhorn algorithm, that we conjecture to be inner faithful.
