EduceLab-Scrolls: Verifiable Recovery of Text from Herculaneum Papyri using X-ray CT

We present a complete software pipeline for revealing the hidden texts of the Herculaneum papyri using X-ray CT images. This enhanced virtual unwrapping pipeline combines machine learning with a novel geometric framework linking 3D and 2D images. We also present EduceLab-Scrolls, a comprehensive open dataset representing two decades of research effort on this problem. EduceLab-Scrolls contains a set of volumetric X-ray CT images of both small fragments and intact, rolled scrolls. The dataset also contains 2D image labels that are used in the supervised training of an ink detection model. Labeling is enabled by aligning spectral photography of scroll fragments with X-ray CT images of the same fragments, thus creating a machine-learnable mapping between image spaces and modalities. This alignment permits supervised learning for the detection of "invisible" carbon ink in X-ray CT, a task that is "impossible" even for human expert labelers. To our knowledge, this is the first aligned dataset of its kind and is the largest dataset ever released in the heritage domain. Our method is capable of revealing accurate lines of text on scroll fragments with known ground truth. Revealed text is verified using visual confirmation, quantitative image metrics, and scholarly review. EduceLab-Scrolls has also enabled the discovery, for the first time, of hidden texts from the Herculaneum papyri, which we present here. We anticipate that the EduceLab-Scrolls dataset will generate more textual discovery as research continues.

ScrollScape: Unlocking 32K Image Generation With Video Diffusion Priors

While diffusion models excel at generating images with conventional dimensions, pushing them to synthesize ultra-high-resolution imagery at extreme aspect ratios (EAR) often triggers catastrophic structural failures, such as object repetition and spatial fragmentation. This limitation fundamentally stems from a lack of robust spatial priors, as static text-to-image models are primarily trained on image distributions with conventional dimensions. To overcome this bottleneck, we present ScrollScape, a novel framework that reformulates EAR image synthesis into a continuous video generation process through two core innovations. By mapping the spatial expansion of a massive canvas to the temporal evolution of video frames, ScrollScape leverages the inherent temporal consistency of video models as a powerful global constraint to ensure long-range structural integrity. Specifically, Scanning Positional Encoding (ScanPE) distributes global coordinates across frames to act as a flexible moving camera, while Scrolling Super-Resolution (ScrollSR) leverages video super-resolution priors to circumvent memory bottlenecks, efficiently scaling outputs to an unprecedented 32K resolution. Fine-tuned on a curated 3K multi-ratio image dataset, ScrollScape effectively aligns pre-trained video priors with the EAR generation task. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that it significantly outperforms existing image-diffusion baselines by eliminating severe localized artifacts. Consequently, our method overcomes inherent structural bottlenecks to ensure exceptional global coherence and visual fidelity across diverse domains at extreme scales.

Deep Hough Transform for Semantic Line Detection

We focus on a fundamental task of detecting meaningful line structures, a.k.a. semantic line, in natural scenes. Many previous methods regard this problem as a special case of object detection and adjust existing object detectors for semantic line detection. However, these methods neglect the inherent characteristics of lines, leading to sub-optimal performance. Lines enjoy much simpler geometric property than complex objects and thus can be compactly parameterized by a few arguments. To better exploit the property of lines, in this paper, we incorporate the classical Hough transform technique into deeply learned representations and propose a one-shot end-to-end learning framework for line detection. By parameterizing lines with slopes and biases, we perform Hough transform to translate deep representations into the parametric domain, in which we perform line detection. Specifically, we aggregate features along candidate lines on the feature map plane and then assign the aggregated features to corresponding locations in the parametric domain. Consequently, the problem of detecting semantic lines in the spatial domain is transformed into spotting individual points in the parametric domain, making the post-processing steps, i.e. non-maximal suppression, more efficient. Furthermore, our method makes it easy to extract contextual line features eg features along lines close to a specific line, that are critical for accurate line detection. In addition to the proposed method, we design an evaluation metric to assess the quality of line detection and construct a large scale dataset for the line detection task. Experimental results on our proposed dataset and another public dataset demonstrate the advantages of our method over previous state-of-the-art alternatives.

MagicScroll: Nontypical Aspect-Ratio Image Generation for Visual Storytelling via Multi-Layered Semantic-Aware Denoising

Visual storytelling often uses nontypical aspect-ratio images like scroll paintings, comic strips, and panoramas to create an expressive and compelling narrative. While generative AI has achieved great success and shown the potential to reshape the creative industry, it remains a challenge to generate coherent and engaging content with arbitrary size and controllable style, concept, and layout, all of which are essential for visual storytelling. To overcome the shortcomings of previous methods including repetitive content, style inconsistency, and lack of controllability, we propose MagicScroll, a multi-layered, progressive diffusion-based image generation framework with a novel semantic-aware denoising process. The model enables fine-grained control over the generated image on object, scene, and background levels with text, image, and layout conditions. We also establish the first benchmark for nontypical aspect-ratio image generation for visual storytelling including mediums like paintings, comics, and cinematic panoramas, with customized metrics for systematic evaluation. Through comparative and ablation studies, MagicScroll showcases promising results in aligning with the narrative text, improving visual coherence, and engaging the audience. We plan to release the code and benchmark in the hope of a better collaboration between AI researchers and creative practitioners involving visual storytelling.
