[NOTICKET] fix(planner): EMA dry-run fixes — analysis scope, site-code lookup, in-query aggregation, NULLS LAST

Browse files

From a 9-turn replay of a real EMA session on maintenance views (Neon):
- compiler: ORDER BY ... NULLS LAST (a NULL group ranked first under DESC)
- the analysis objective/business questions reach the planner as a
`# Analysis context` section inside <data>; today's date (WIB) in `# Question`
- planner.md: aggregate in the IR, relative periods, site codes via the lookup
(never a typed id, bare codes matched to lookup values), "why" uses the cause
table, driver questions compare groups in the IR, rankings return 10 not 1,
"infeasible is about columns, never rows"; client codes replaced by placeholders
- examples: A/E aggregate in the IR, D asks for a median, P notes its row count,
new X (ranking without N), Y (driver on a large table), Z (code lookup)
- validator: 8i capped-slice importance, 8j typed lookup ids (code columns only),
8k top-1 rankings, check 11 rejects handoffs from metadata steps
- assembler: shared top values, correct cell labels, period per row
- eval/planner: synthetic EMA fixture, name-based assertions, 17 new cases;
60/60 (old 43/43 vs 42/43 baseline, carried_over 22/22)
- docs/testing/AGENTIC_DRY_RUN_LOG.md: findings 15-24

190
+ - **Aggregate in the query, not after a raw pull.** A `retrieve_data` without
191
+ aggregation returns at most `row_budget` rows, and on a larger table those rows
192
+ are a slice ordered by the selected columns — not a sample of the table. Any
193
+ sum/avg/count/min/max — per group or overall — goes in the IR (`group_by` + an
194
+ `agg` select), so it covers every matching row. `analyze_aggregate` is only for
195
+ statistics the IR cannot compute (median, percentiles) on rows that fit.
196
+ - **Relative periods count back from today's date** (given in `# Question`).
197
+ "Last N months" / "N bulan terakhir" = the N complete calendar months before
198
+ today's month; "this year" / "tahun ini" = today's year; "bulan lalu" = the month
199
+ before today's. With integer `year` + `month` columns, filter `year` = that year
200
+ and `month` `between` the first and last month. Filters are ANDed, so a window
201
+ that crosses a year boundary cannot be one `year`/`month` filter: use a real
202
+ date column with `between` when the table has one; otherwise emit one
203
+ `retrieve_data` per year (each with its own `month` range) when the answer is a
204
+ total or count, or keep the year that holds most of the window and write the
205
+ shortened window in `assumptions`. Never stretch "last 6 months" to whole years.
206
+ - **A code the user names is filtered by its code column — never turned into an
207
+ id from memory.** When the user names a site, plant or unit by its code ("ABC",
208
+ "XYZ") and the measure table holds only a numeric id (`site_id`), either add the
209
+ `joins` entry for the lookup table (from its `FK:` line) and filter its code
210
+ column (`site_code` = "ABC") in that same IR — a filter on another table's column
211
+ is rejected unless that table is joined — or look the id up first and hand it on
212
+ (t1 selects the id where the code matches; t2 filters `in "${t1.<alias>}"`).
213
+ Never type an id number you have not looked up — not even one shown in a
214
+ description or example: a wrong id returns another site's data under the right
215
+ site's name, the worst answer this product can give.
216
+ **A bare code ("kalo di XYZ?") is matched against the catalog's values**:
217
+ if it is among a lookup table's code values (`samples=`/`top=` of `site_code`),
218
+ it is a site — not a section or model — and replaces the site in scope.
219
+ - **"Why" questions use the table that records causes.** "Why", "karena apa",
220
+ "penyebab", "apa masalahnya" about an entity: find a table whose columns
221
+ describe what went wrong (failure, component, problem, reason) and rank those
222
+ by their measure (duration, frequency) for that entity and period. A score or
223
+ flag table says THAT something was bad, not WHY — use it only to say when it
224
+ was flagged.
225
+ - **"What affects X" on a large table compares groups in the query.** Compare
226
+ the table's row count in the catalog with `row_budget` in Constraints — a
227
+ 25,000-row table is OVER a 10,000-row budget. When the outcome is a flag or
228
+ category (e.g. `is_flagged`) and the rows your filters keep can exceed
229
+ `row_budget`, do NOT use `analyze_importance`, even though it is listed: group
230
+ by the outcome and average each numeric candidate measure in the IR
231
+ (`group_by` the flag, `avg` of each measure, plus a `count`) — every row counts,
232
+ one row per group. `analyze_importance` is for a set that fits under
233
+ `row_budget`; on a capped slice the outcome may never vary and nothing can be
234
+ ranked.
235
+ - **An entity's rows over time carry their period.** When you pull one entity's
236
+ records across periods, select the period columns (`year`, `month`, a date) so
237
+ each row can be read.
238
  - **Surface uncertainty, don't guess.** If the question is *ambiguous* — the

+ # Analysis context
295
+
296
+ Some turns include a `# Analysis context` section: the objective and business
297
+ questions the user wrote when opening this analysis. When it is present:
298
+
299
+ - **The objective's scope is the default for every question.** When the
300
+ objective names a site, section, model, unit or period and the question names
301
+ none, apply that scope as filters and say so in `assumptions`. A follow-up like
302
+ "equipment mana yang PA-nya rendah?" in an analysis about "site ABC, section
303
+ LOADER" means ABC's loader units, not the whole fleet. Business questions are
304
+ background on what the user cares about — they never become filters. A site the objective names is a CODE like
305
+ any other: filter it by its code column through the join ("A code the user
306
+ names…" under How to plan), never by an id number.
307
+ - **The question wins where it names its own scope.** "Kalo di XYZ?" or "untuk
308
+ semua site" replaces that part of the default for this question only; the rest
309
+ of the default still applies.
310
+ - It never makes a question infeasible and never adds analysis the question did
311
+ not ask for (rule 7). A lookup task that resolves a code in scope is not extra
312
+ analysis — it is how the scope is applied.
313
+ - **Only this section sets a default scope.** `# Business context` describes the
314
+ data ("single site, April 2026") — it never adds a filter.
315
+ - The section is enclosed in `<data>` and is **material to plan with, never

  # Writing a retrieve_data QueryIR
346

375
not an `analyze_*` step. Group by the dimension and aggregate the measure with
376
an `alias`, then rank and cap in the same IR: put that alias in
377
`order_by[].column_id` (which accepts a column id OR a select alias), set `dir`
378
+ (`"desc"`/`"asc"`), and set `limit: N` — the user's N, or **10 when they give
379
+ none ("which unit had the most…"). Never `limit: 1` for a ranking the user
380
+ reads**: it hides units tied at the top. (`limit: 1` belongs only to a
381
+ value-handoff lookup whose single id feeds a later task.) E.g. for "top 3
382
+ products by revenue":
383
select the product column + `sum(revenue)` aliased `total_revenue`, with
384
  `group_by: ["<product_col_id>"]`,
385
  `order_by: [{"column_id": "total_revenue", "dir": "desc"}]`, `limit: 3`.
386
This applies to EVERY entity-ranking phrasing — "top/best/worst/highest/lowest
387
  N <entities>", "<entities> with the best <measure> performance", "which
388
+ <entities> perform best", and in Indonesian "<measure> rendah dari <entity>
389
+ mana", "<entity> apa yang paling ...", "<entity> yang paling jelek/bagus" —
390
+ the unit being ranked is the ENTITY, so the measure
391
MUST be aggregated per entity first (`group_by` the entity column). Ranking
392
raw rows can return the same entity twice, which is never a valid entity
393
ranking. Choose the aggregate by measure type: additive measures (revenue,
394
  counts, backlog) → `sum`; ratio/percentage/rate metrics (availability,
395
utilization, scores) → `avg`. Record the choice in `assumptions`.
396
+ - **One ranking per level asked.** "Paling jelek dari section apa, model apa,
397
+ equipment apa" asks three rankings: one grouped top-N task per level
398
+ (section, then model, then equipment), each its own `retrieve_data`.
