Class 6 | Ch7: Fractions
Types: Proper(p<q), Improper(p>=q), Mixed(whole+proper), Unit(p=1).
Equivalent: 1/2=2/4=3/6. Multiply or divide both by same number.
Comparing: same denominator compare numerators. Same numerator: smaller denominator=LARGER fraction.
Add/subtract: same denominator add numerators. Different: find LCM first.
Example: 3/4+5/6-1/3. LCM=12. = 9/12+10/12-4/12 = 15/12 = 5/4 = 1 and 1/4.
Ascending 2/3,3/4,5/8,7/12: LCM=24 → 16,18,15,14 over 24 → 7/12 < 5/8 < 2/3 < 3/4.
Common mistake: 1/2+1/3 ≠ 2/5. Correct: 3/6+2/6=5/6. |
