# LiiS Circular Economy Simulator
A simulation framework for exploring product configurations and understanding how design, logistics, and business model choices impact circular economy performance.
## Purpose
This simulator helps LiiS.com and its consortium partners (BeSafe, Hamax) evaluate:
- **P&L impact** of circular business models vs. linear alternatives
- **CTI performance** (Circular Transition Indicators) across product configurations
- **Return grade distribution** and its effect on refurbishment costs
- **Logistics optimization** for multi-cycle product flows
## CTI Framework
The simulator uses [WBCSD's Circular Transition Indicators](https://www.wbcsd.org/Programs/Circular-Economy/Metrics-Measurement/Circular-transition-indicators) (CTI v3.0) to measure circularity:
### Core Indicators
| Indicator | Definition | Target |
|-----------|------------|--------|
| **EoLRR** (End-of-Life Recovery Rate) | `(Units Recovered + Refurbished) / Total Distributed` | 72% |
| **PRI** (Primary Resource Input) | `Virgin Material / Total Material` | <30% by Year 2 |
| **Lifetime Extension** | `Actual Use Years / Design Lifetime` | 1.0x (full design life) |
### How CTI Flows Into P&L
```
Return Rate (80%) × Grade Quality (90% A+B) = EoLRR (72%)
↓
Units Available for 2nd Cycle
↓
Blended Cost = (New × €100 + Refurb × €20) / Total
↓
Break-even Price
↓
Profit Margin at €25/month
```

## Product Configuration
Each product has a `config.yaml` defining:
- **Design specs**: Lifetime, use cycles, durability
- **Cost structure**: Manufacturing, refurbishment by grade (A/B/C), logistics
- **CTI parameters**: Target EoLRR, reusability indices
- **Return assumptions**: Return rate, grade distribution
- **Environmental data**: CO2 per manufacturing/refurbishment cycle
### Adding a New Product
1. Create `products/{product-name}/config.yaml`
2. Follow the schema in existing configs (see `products/besafe/config.yaml`)
3. Run `/analyze-product {product-name}` to validate
## Quick Start
### Run the Interactive Dashboard
```bash
# Install dependencies
pip install -e .
# Launch the Streamlit dashboard
streamlit run app.py
```
The dashboard opens in your browser with:
- Product selector dropdown
- Sliders for return rate, grade distribution, lease price
- Live-updating CTI metrics (EoLRR, PRI, Lifetime Extension)
- P&L breakdown charts
- Sensitivity analysis visualization
### With Claude Code Skills
```bash
# Analyze a single product
/analyze-product besafe
# Compare multiple products
/compare-products besafe hamax
# Add a new product configuration
/add-product stokke
```
### With Python
```python
from src.simulator import load_product, calculate_cti, calculate_pl
config = load_product("besafe")
cti = calculate_cti(config)
pl = calculate_pl(config, cti)
```
## Key Concepts
### Product Grades
| Grade | Condition | Action | Cost |
|-------|-----------|--------|------|
| **A** | Reusable as-is | Wash + inspect | €11 |
| **B** | Needs refurbishment | Parts replacement | €44 |
| **C** | Scrap only | Disassemble for recycling | €6 |
### Circular vs. Linear Comparison
| Metric | Linear Model | Circular Model |
|--------|--------------|----------------|
| Units per 12-year lifecycle | 3 new | 1 new + 2 refurb |
| Total cost | €300 | €140 |
| CO2 emissions | 21.9 kg | 12.2 kg |
| Revenue per unit | €300 | €900 (3 customers) |
## Background
LiiS.com is a Norwegian subscription platform for children's products. The simulator supports:
- **Innovation Norway grant applications** with auditable CTI metrics
- **Consortium decision-making** for BeSafe and Hamax product design
- **Operational planning** at Lundebygruppen (refurbishment partner)
See the full context in the [CDO briefing document](docs/cti-framework-briefing.md).
