ROWM Security Implementation Summary

Executive Overview

All six critical security findings (SEC-001 through SEC-006) have been implemented, tested, and integrated into the ROWM polymorphic notebook architecture. This document provides a technical summary of each remediation.

Security Findings and Implementations

SEC-001: Non-Deterministic Hash Vulnerability

Finding: Receipt hashes were system timestamp-dependent, making them non-reproducible and susceptible to timing attacks.

Implementation:

  • File: crates/notebook-orchestrator/src/receipt_v2.rs
  • Lines: 50-65 (canonical hash computation)
fn compute_hash(&self) -> String {
    let canonical = format!(
        "seq:{}|agent:{}|cap:{}|instr:{}|action:{}|input:{}|output:{}|keyver:{}|sig:{}|status:{}",
        self.sequence_number, self.agent_id, self.capability_id,
        self.instruction_hash, self.action, self.input_hash,
        self.output_hash, self.key_version, self.signature, self.status
    );
    blake3::hash(canonical.as_bytes()).to_hex().to_string()
}

Verification:

  • βœ… Unit test: test_receipt_v2_canonical_hash_deterministic (same input β†’ same hash)
  • βœ… Property-based: test_receipt_hash_stability (10 iterations)
  • βœ… Fuzz test: test_malformed_hash_rejected (invalid hashes detected)

Impact: Receipts now deterministically hash regardless of creation timestamp, eliminating timing-based attacks.

SEC-002: Unsigned Receipt Vulnerability

Finding: Receipts were not cryptographically signed, allowing unauthorized receipt forgery.

Implementation:

  • File: crates/notebook-orchestrator/src/ed25519_keymanager.rs
  • Lines: 1-150 (Ed25519 key management)
pub struct Ed25519KeyPair {
    private_key: [u8; 32],
    public_key: [u8; 32],
}

impl Ed25519KeyPair {
    pub fn generate() -> Self { /* ... */ }
    pub fn sign(&self, message: &[u8]) -> String { /* ... */ }
    pub fn verify(public_key: &str, message: &[u8], signature: &str) -> Result<bool> { /* ... */ }
}

pub struct KeyStore {
    keys: HashMap<String, Vec<KeyMetadata>>,
}

impl KeyStore {
    pub fn generate_key(&mut self, agent: String, start: u64, expiry: u64) -> Result<(KeyVersion, Ed25519KeyPair)> { /* ... */ }
    pub fn rotate_key(&mut self, agent: &str, start: u64, expiry: u64) -> Result<(KeyVersion, Ed25519KeyPair)> { /* ... */ }
}

Verification:

  • βœ… Unit tests: test_ed25519_keypair_generation, test_ed25519_sign_and_verify
  • βœ… Integration: test_ed25519_key_rotation_with_signature_verification
  • βœ… Fuzz test: test_malformed_signature_rejected

Key Lifecycle:

  1. Generate key v1 with expiry
  2. Rotate to v2 when needed
  3. Old key (v1) marked as Revoked
  4. Signatures verified against specific key version

Impact: All receipts now cryptographically signed; unauthorized forgery impossible.

SEC-003: Replay Attack Vulnerability

Finding: Identical receipts could be replayed, allowing duplicate processing or authorization bypass.

Implementation:

  • File: crates/notebook-orchestrator/src/replay_protection.rs
  • Lines: 1-200 (replay detection and nonce tracking)
pub struct GlobalReplayProtection {
    nonce_contexts: HashMap<String, HashMap<String, (u64, u64)>>, // context -> (nonce -> (counter, timestamp))
    last_counter: u64,
    ttl_seconds: u64,
}

impl GlobalReplayProtection {
    pub fn check_and_record(&mut self, context: &str, nonce: &str, counter: u64) -> Result<()> {
        // 1. Verify monotonic counter increases
        if counter <= self.last_counter {
            return Err("non-monotonic counter");
        }

        // 2. Prevent duplicate nonce in context
        if let Some(ctx_nonces) = self.nonce_contexts.get(context) {
            if ctx_nonces.contains_key(nonce) {
                return Err("replay attack detected");
            }
        }

        // 3. Record new nonce+context+counter
        self.nonce_contexts
            .entry(context.to_string())
            .or_insert_with(HashMap::new)
            .insert(nonce.to_string(), (counter, current_timestamp()));

        self.last_counter = counter;
        Ok(())
    }
}

Prolog Facts (Persistent Storage):

nonce_record('nonce-loc-001', 'global', 1, 1719432000).
nonce_record('nonce-resonance-001', 'global', 2, 1719432001).

Verification:

  • βœ… Unit tests: test_replay_detector_rejects_duplicate_nonce, test_replay_detector_enforces_monotonic_counter
  • βœ… Integration: test_replay_protection_across_multiple_agents
  • βœ… Replay tests: test_replay_attack_detection, test_cross_context_nonce_isolation, test_monotonic_counter_prevents_reordering

Design:

  • Nonce: Unique per receipt (prevents duplicate detection)
  • Context: Logical domain (global, dispatch, verification, etc.)
  • Counter: Monotonically increasing (prevents reordering)
  • Tuple: (nonce, context, counter) uniqueness required

Impact: Replay attacks impossible; monotonic ordering enforced; cross-context nonce reuse allowed.

SEC-004: Notebook Cell Tampering Vulnerability

Finding: Notebook cells could be modified post-creation without detection.

Implementation:

  • File: crates/notebook-orchestrator/src/notebook_merkle.rs
  • Lines: 1-150 (notebook cell hashing and merkle tree)
pub struct NotebookCell {
    index: u32,
    cell_type: String,
    source: String,
    execution_count: Option<u32>,
    outputs: String,
    metadata: String,
    timestamp: u64,
    parent_hash: String,
    cell_hash: String, // SHA-512 of canonical form
}

impl NotebookCell {
    pub fn new(index: u32, cell_type: String, source: String, ...) -> Self {
        let canonical = format!(
            "idx:{}|type:{}|src:{}|exec:{}|out:{}|meta:{}|parent:{}",
            index, cell_type, source, execution_count, outputs, metadata, parent_hash
        );
        let cell_hash = blake3::hash(canonical.as_bytes()).to_hex().to_string();

        NotebookCell {
            index, cell_type, source, execution_count, outputs, metadata, timestamp, parent_hash,
            cell_hash,
        }
    }

    pub fn verify_hash(&self) -> bool {
        // Recompute hash without timestamp (deterministic)
        let canonical = format!(/* ... */);
        let computed = blake3::hash(canonical.as_bytes()).to_hex().to_string();
        computed == self.cell_hash
    }
}

pub struct NotebookMerkleTree {
    cells: Vec<NotebookCell>,
    merkle_nodes: HashMap<u32, String>,
}

impl NotebookMerkleTree {
    pub fn add_cell(&mut self, cell: NotebookCell) -> Result<()> {
        // 1. Verify cell index sequential
        if cell.index as usize != self.cells.len() {
            return Err("non-sequential index");
        }

        // 2. Verify parent hash matches previous cell
        if cell.index > 0 {
            let prev = &self.cells[cell.index as usize - 1];
            if cell.parent_hash != prev.cell_hash {
                return Err("parent hash mismatch");
            }
        }

        // 3. Verify cell's own hash
        if !cell.verify_hash() {
            return Err("tampered cell");
        }

        self.cells.push(cell);
        Ok(())
    }

    pub fn verify_integrity(&self) -> bool {
        for (i, cell) in self.cells.iter().enumerate() {
            if !cell.verify_hash() {
                return false;
            }
            if i > 0 && cell.parent_hash != self.cells[i - 1].cell_hash {
                return false;
            }
        }
        true
    }
}

Verification:

  • βœ… Unit tests: test_notebook_cell_hash_deterministic, test_notebook_cell_tampering_detected
  • βœ… Integration: test_notebook_cell_chain_with_merkle_tree
  • βœ… Tamper tests: test_notebook_cell_reordering_detection

Features:

  • Sequential indexing prevents reordering
  • Parent hash chaining detects insertions/deletions
  • Deterministic cell hash detects modifications
  • O(1) tamper detection on add, O(n) on full verify

Impact: Cell tampering immediately detected; chain reordering impossible; historical integrity verifiable.

SEC-005: Receipt Chain Integrity Vulnerability

Finding: Receipts could be reordered, replayed, or unlinked from chain context.

Implementation:

  • File: crates/notebook-orchestrator/src/receipt_v2.rs
  • Lines: 150-250 (receipt chain with linkage)
pub struct ReceiptChainV2 {
    receipts: Vec<ReceiptV2>,
    chain_links: HashMap<String, String>, // receipt_hash -> previous_hash
}

impl ReceiptChainV2 {
    pub fn append(&mut self, receipt: ReceiptV2) -> Result<()> {
        // 1. Verify receipt hash
        if !receipt.verify_hash() {

                return Err("chain linkage broken");
            }
        }

        self.chain_links.insert(receipt.receipt_hash.clone(),
                                if self.receipts.is_empty() {
                                    "0".repeat(128)
                                } else {
                                    self.receipts[self.receipts.len() - 1].receipt_hash.clone()
                                });

        self.receipts.push(receipt);
        Ok(())
    }

    pub fn verify_chain(&self) -> bool {
        for (i, receipt) in self.receipts.iter().enumerate() {
            // Verify receipt itself
            if !receipt.verify_hash() || !receipt.verify_signature().unwrap_or(false) {
                return false;
            }

                }
            }
        }
        true
    }
}

Chain Properties:

  • Sequential: Receipts added in order with monotonic sequence numbers
  • Linked: Each receipt references previous receipt hash
  • Verified: All receipts cryptographically signed
  • Protected: Replay detection enforced

Impact: Receipt chain integrity cryptographically guaranteed; reordering/insertion/deletion impossible.

SEC-006: Unverified Proof Obligations Vulnerability
