Maverick M-26(Low)

Maverick M-26(Low) is a compact, decoder-only Transformer language model developed as part of the Maverick project.

M-26(Low) is designed as an experimental general-purpose language model, with a focus on text generation, question answering, instruction following, reasoning, coding, and conversational interaction. The model is intended to explore how capable a relatively small, independently trained Transformer can become through carefully curated training data and targeted fine-tuning.

Unlike models that rely primarily on large-scale instruction tuning, Maverick is developed as a custom model from the ground up, allowing its architecture, tokenizer, training pipeline, data mixture, and behavioral capabilities to be iteratively experimented with.

Intended Capabilities

M-26(Low) is being developed to support:

  • General text completion and generation
  • Question answering
  • Basic instruction following
  • General knowledge
  • Reasoning and problem solving
  • Mathematics
  • Python and programming assistance
  • Educational tasks
  • Creative writing
  • Conversational interaction
  • Future tool-use and agentic capabilities

Development

M-26(Low) is part of the ongoing Maverick model family. The model is continuously evaluated and improved through additional training and instruction fine-tuning.

Development focuses not only on reducing validation loss, but also on measuring practical behavior such as:

  • Following explicit instructions
  • Answering questions directly
  • Maintaining topic consistency
  • Producing appropriate response lengths
  • Following formatting constraints
  • Terminating responses correctly
  • Using external tools when appropriate

Because Maverick is an experimental project, capabilities may vary significantly between tasks.

Model Limitations

M-26(Low) is a relatively small language model and should not be expected to perform at the level of large frontier or commercial language models.

The model may produce:

  • Incorrect or fabricated information
  • Irrelevant or repetitive responses
  • Poorly reasoned answers
  • Inconsistent instruction following
  • Topic drift during long generations
  • Incorrect code or mathematical solutions

Outputs should therefore be reviewed rather than treated as authoritative.

Project

Maverick is an independent experimental AI project focused on understanding and building language models from the ground up.
