π Overview & Architectural Breakthrough
THOR-LM-1B is a modern ~915 Million parameter foundation transformer pre-trained from scratch on high-quality educational web text from FineWeb-Edu (sample-10BT).
Unlike standard LLMs (such as LLaMA, Mistral, or GPT) that rely on coordinate-wise AdamW or static spectral Muon, THOR-LM-1B was trained exclusively with THOR:
- π Riemannian Polar Orthogonal Descent: Enforces unitary condition number ($\kappa = 1.0$) across all 2D parameter tensors via quintic Newton-Schulz iterations.
- π‘οΈ Noise-Floor Dynamic Braking: Autonomously moderates step sizes during high stochastic variance regimes based on the mathematical noise-floor theorem $\rho_{\text{floor}} = \sqrt{\frac{1-\beta}{1+\beta}} \approx 0.1601$.
- π§ Lie Manifold Commutator Torque: $\Omega = [W W^T, U] = (W W^T) U - U (W^T W)$ eliminates orthogonal representation drift across curved neural manifolds.
Throughout the entire 1,000,079,360 token pretraining run (7,630 optimization steps), zero loss spikes, zero NaN gradients, and zero numerical instability were recorded.
